Financial Infidelity – Is Financial Cheating as Destructive as Sexual Cheating?

What would you consider to be worse: Your spouse is hiding 10,000$ in a secret bank account that you never heard of, or your spouse is hiding a month long affair with his co-worker?

According to a recent survey, conducted by SELF magazine and  the Today.com website, more than 60 percent of both men and women (23,000 people) think cheating is cheating, no matter if it’s financial or sexual. Meaning, both kinds of cheating are just as destructive to a relationship.

 Do You Agree??

Allow me this quick pause for my personal opinion, and here it goes:

 WHAT???

 I don’t think so.

I think that these 60 percent that think like this – Have obviously never been physically or emotionally cheated on. They just don’t know how it feels, so they think these two types of knives-being-stuck-in-your-back hurt you in the same way.

I do firmly believe that a relationship can not have any money secrets in it, and it’s humiliating and trust-breaking to find out your spouse is not telling you all when it comes to money, but I would definitely prefer to find THAT out, instead of finding out my husband has been sleeping with another women for a month.

 But…

Back to Where we Were – Some More Interesting Facts about Financial Infidelity

financial infidelity

The survey had a Few Interesting Findings, here are the best ones:

  1. The funniest finding was this: Remember the 60 percent of people thinking that “cheating is cheating” no matter what kind?  Well, almost 60 percent of the people have admitted to lying to their spouse about money in some way or another.
  1. The excuses – More than 34 percent of men and women keeping money secrets from their spouse said it’s because they disagree with their partner about where to spend the money.
  1. What Are They Hiding – 32 percent of women said they have hidden shopping purchases from their spouse, compared with only 17 percent of men. And the all time favorite:  More than 25 percent of women said they would pretend something was old when it was actually a new purchase, compared with about 8 percent of men (Now that’s funny but true).

Jokes aside, Financial Infidelity can be Devastating to Your Relationship

It doesn’t matter if you are hiding the new skirt you just bough for spring, or if your husband refuses to tell you how much money he made before you got together, money can be a huge stumbling block for relationships. You have to restore the honesty  if you want your relationship to survive.

Money secrets in a marriage or relationship can be a definite Trust-Breaker. And a relationship can not survive without trust, as we all know.

It doesn’t really matter what you so – Marriage counseling sessions, one time
Online Marriage Counseling
or a marriage saving program – Just do something and do it today, before it’s too late and you find yourself with one new pair of shoes and zero relationships.
